In dental jargon, we call plaque to a buildup of bacteria on the teeth and along the gum line, which only takes a few hours to adhere to a presumed completely clean denture.
This colorless and sticky film of bacteria causes cavities and gum disease and, when not properly removed with a toothbrush and floss, turns into tartar, as a result of calcification.
If it is not given adequate and timely treatment, tartar often becomes a cause of cavities, gum disease and tooth loss and a perverse detractor of aesthetics.
The method to completely remove tartar and rough areas that accumulate bacteria is by scaling and smoothing the roots, a procedure that generally requires the use of laser technology.
There are basically two types of tartar, depending on the area in which it is found:
- Supragingival tartar, present only on the surface of the teeth and gums.
- Subgingival tartar, which forms under the gums and forms periodontal pockets, causing diseases such as gingivitis and periodontitis.
The treatment, also known as dental curettage, consists of cleaning the teeth and gums, using ultrasound and the use of curettes, for scaling and root planing of the teeth.
