Gingivitis is inflammation of the gums, caused by a thin, sticky, colorless layer of bacteria that constantly forms on the teeth and gums.
It does not hurt; It is hardly noticeable and is the easiest stage of periodontal disease to treat, but if not treated properly, it can cause permanent damage to the teeth and jaw.
It is even usually the initial phase of infectious diseases in the mouth, which are transmitted by blood and saliva to any organ of the body, including the heart.
The signs and symptoms of gingivitis include redness, inflammation, and tenderness in the gums, which may bleed during tooth brushing.
Its presence can also be suspected due to the separation of the gums (whereby the teeth appear to be more elongated), bad breath or a bad taste in the mouth.
The prevention of gingivitis consists of maintaining habits of oral hygiene:
- Proper tooth brushing and flossing.
- Adequate nutrition to guarantee adequate nutrition and strengthen the jaws and teeth.
- Eliminate tobacco use.
But the hygienic habits are not always enough, to avoid the disease. Brushing, for example, only reaches 25% of the mouth, so it is essential to have a program of dental control visits.
Dental cleanings to improve dental health
Professional gingivitis care usually reverses symptoms and prevents the development of gum disease and tooth loss.
A dental cleaning performed by a professional is a scaling and root planing, which consists of removing plaque and bacteria from the surface of the teeth and under the gums. A laser or an ultrasonic device can be used.
The normal thing is that the condition is cured after a deep cleaning, as long as the patient continues with adequate oral hygiene.
At Costa Rica Cero Caries we offer you the opportunity to have an annual dental cleaning, for a period of ten years, when acquiring a membership. In the cleaning process we use ultrasound for scraping (removal of tartar), special brushes to remove bacterial plaque and fluoride to strengthen tooth enamel.
It is a painless process that fulfills the function of eliminating gingivitis and preventing some dental diseases of greater consequence.
Remember that you can contact us and request information on this or any other of our memberships, our goal is to provide a population without cavities and with a healthy mouth.
