Dental implant surgery is the procedure that we use in odontology to replace the roots of the teeth with metal pins, in order to replace, with an artificial dental piece, a missing or damaged tooth.
It is a well accepted surgical alternative, when teeth or bridges are not adequately fixed, and an option for placing bridges when a lack of roots is perceived in natural teeth.
The procedure to follow depends on the type of implant and the state of the jaw and brings, as a benefit, the opportunity for the patient to have a solid support for teeth with the functions and appearance of natural teeth.
Precautions
Although the surgical procedure involves a certain challenge to the health of a patient, as with any other surgery, the risks are generally minimal and can be easily treated.
There may be an infection at the implant site, injury to nerves or nearby structures, or certain heart rhythm disturbances.
The procedure requires an exhaustive evaluation of the patient, which includes a comprehensive dental examination, by means of X-rays and 3D images, an analysis of their medical history and a treatment plan, according to the needs and particularities of each patient.
Preventive measures
The implant is a solution for the absence of one or more teeth, originating from natural causes or accidents that are sometimes unavoidable, but also originating from insufficient attention to dental health.
The planning process for a surgical operation may involve the participation of a maxillofacial and oral surgeon, a dentist for the treatment of supporting structures for the teeth, a prosthetist and, eventually, an otolaryngologist.
To the extent that the implant does not come from a need arising from natural or accidental causes, a procedure of this nature can be avoided, adopting preventive measures.
